When looking for enemy’s ship with extremely slim chance to locate, Capt. JA:“… like looking for an honest man in parliament.”
Dr. Stephen Maturin: “Jack, I fear you have burdened me with a debt I can never fully repay.”
Capt. Jack Aubrey: “Nonsense! Name a shrub after me. Something prickly and hard to eradicate.”
Dr. Stephen Maturin: “A shrub? Nonsense! I shall name a new species of tortoise after you: Testudo Aubreii!”
Capt. Jack Aubrey: “Well, Stephen… the bird’s flightless?”
Dr. Stephen Maturin: “Yes.”

Apparently, according to a friend of mine, it is the naval tradition during mess dinner to have a toast for each day of the week.
Now, here’s the full list for the whole week:
Monday – our ships at sea
Tuesday – our men
Wednesday – ourselves, because no one else is likely to both
Thursday – a bloody war or a sickly season (to ensure quicker promotion)
Friday – a willing foe and sea room (The two preceding seem to be of historical interest only)
Saturday – wives and sweethearts – may they never meet
Sunday – absent friends.
